Create subscription topics¶
A topic is a category of email, such as Weekly offers or Product news. People can opt out of one topic without leaving your whole list. At the end, you have topics that campaigns can use and contacts can opt out of.
Before you start¶
- You can see Manage in the Email panel. If not, ask your admin.
- You know which kinds of email you send, for example offers, news and receipts.
Steps¶
Open the topic list¶
- Open Email in the left rail, then select Manage.
- Select Topics. The page title reads Topics.
- With no topics, the page says: Subscription categories contacts can opt out of individually on your preference centre. Otherwise it counts your topics.
- Read the Topic Name, Description, Created On and Status columns.
Create a topic¶
- Click Add. The add form opens.
- In Topic Name, type a short name people will recognise, for example
Weekly offers. It is required. - Optional: in Description, say what the topic sends.
- Save the form. The topic appears in the list.
See where a topic is used¶
- Click View Details on a topic row. The Topic Details dialog opens. Click the maximize button to make it larger, and Restore to shrink it.
- Read Record Status, Used In and Opted Out. Used In lists the campaigns that use the topic. It says Not used by any campaign yet. if none do.
- Read Record Info for who created it and when.
- Open History to see earlier changes. It says No revision history available. if there are none.
Use a topic¶
- Tag a campaign with the topic when you create it. A contact who has not opted out of a topic is subscribed to it by default.
- To give a list a topic by default, open the list and set Default Topic. See Use Email Groups.
Edit or delete a topic¶
- Click Edit on the row, change the name or description, and save.
- To remove a topic, click Delete and confirm.
Troubleshooting¶
| Issue | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Used In shows an error. | The campaigns could not be loaded. | Close the dialog and open it again. |
| People still get a topic after opting out. | The campaign was not tagged with the topic. | Tag the campaign with the topic before you send. |
| You cannot find Topics. | It lives inside Manage, not in the main panel. | Open Manage first. |
