Create and assign tasks

Create tasks, give each one an owner, a priority and a due date, and split larger work into subtasks. At the end, each task sits in a board column with a key such as OHANVI-12, and the assignee sees it in their Assigned to me list.

Before you start

  • Your workspace has a task project with at least 1 board column. See Set up a task project.
  • The people you want to assign are members of the project. Only project members appear in the assignee list.

Steps

Create a task from the Tasks panel

  1. Click Tasks in the right-hand rail. The Tasks panel opens.
  2. Click Create at the top of the panel. The task dialog opens.
  3. Click Add a summary and type what needs to be done. The summary is the only required field.
  4. Optional: in Description, add details. Type - or 1. to start a list, and paste images or files straight in.
  5. Optional: set the fields in the right-hand panel, as described in Set the task details.
  6. Click Create. The task is added to the board.

Create a task on the board

  1. On the board, click Create at the top of the page. The same task dialog opens, with the first column as its status.
  2. Fill in the task as in steps 3–6 above.

Add a task straight into a column

Use this for quick tasks when you only need a summary, a type and an assignee.

  1. On the board, hover over a column and click Create at the bottom of its cards.
  2. In What needs to be done?, type the summary.
  3. Optional: click the type icon (tooltip Work type) and pick Epic, Story, Task, Bug or Sub-task.
  4. Optional: click the person icon and pick an assignee.
  5. Press Enter, or click the tick (tooltip Create). The task appears in that column.

Set the task details

The right-hand panel of the task dialog holds the task's details. Expand Details if it is collapsed.
